Electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) for battery charging in all types of electric vehicles (EV, PEV, PHEV, EREV) is classified based on the power requirements and the rate at which the batteries are charged.

AC Level 1 Charging uses low power (15 amps at 110 volts or 7.5 amps at 220 volts) for slow battery charging to provide 2 to 5 miles of electric vehicle range per hour of charging. Lower costs and higher efficiencies encourage widespread use of Level 1 Charging of EV Batteries despite its slower speed.

AC Level 2 Charging uses higher power (20 to 100 amps at 240 volts) for faster battery charging to provide 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charging.

DC Fast Charging uses very high power for even faster battery charging to provide 60 to 80 miles of range in 20 minutes of charging.
