Mission * Why Vehicles Need to use Electricity > Peak oil > Climate change > Renewable energy > Smart grid > Vehicle-to-grid > Vehicle-to-home

Burning petroleum to fuel our vehicles produces carbon dioxide CO2 greenhouse gas pollution that is contributing to the problem of global climate change (global warming).

  • 2012.06.00 - State of CHARGE - Union of Concerned Scientists "The pollutant emissions from our vehicles contribute to unhealthy air and global climate change. As the search for oil moves to more remote and difficult-to-access locations, the risk of serious accidents increases, as demonstrated by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. And defending our access to oil is a great burden to our nation’s finances, our military men and women, and their families. Vehicles powered by electricity have the potential to reduce many of these problems. In most places, electric drive lowers the smog-forming and global warming pollution associated with vehicle use, and when powered by renewable resources, electric vehicles can nearly eliminate such pollution from vehicular operation. Electric vehicles powered by a clean electricity grid offer a key pathway to achieving the greater than 80 percent reduction in global warming pollution we need by mid-century to avoid the worst consequences of climate change."

In this premier episode available online "Hollywood celebrities and respected journalists span the globe to explore the issues of climate change and cover intimate stories of human triumph and tragedy." Don Cheadle investigates closing of a meat packing plant in Texas. Thomas L. Friedman investigates the civil war in Syria. Harrison Ford investigates deforestation in Indonesia. All of these stories show how climate change is already impacting human lives worldwide.

Professor Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University, explains that human activities cause the climate to change. This contributes to more severe drought conditions that led to economic disaster for the local cattle ranchers and the workers in the town where the meat packing plant had to be closed. Dr. Hayhoe's skill at speaking to the public about climate change has earned her a spot on the Time Magazine list of the 100 most influential people of 2014.

  • 2007.09.00 - David Keith - A critical look at geoengineering against climate change - video on TED.com "Environmental scientist David Keith proposes a cheap, effective, shocking means to address climate change: What if we injected a huge cloud of ash into the atmosphere to deflect sunlight and heat? David Keith studies our climate, and the many ideas we've come up with to fix it. A wildly original thinker, he challenges us to look at climate solutions that may seem daring, sometimes even shocking. "
