Dr. Andrew Alfonso Frank of W:University of California, Davis and his teams of students have been experimenting with various advanced vehicle technologies for the last 25 years. He is most widely recognized as the father of the modern plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

- 1998 - Coulomb - hybrid-electric Mercury Sable AIV.
- 1997 - Joule - 1996 Ford Taurus converted to a hybrid electric vehicle.
- 1993 - AfterShock - "Ground-up" hybrid electric vehicle.
